Salishan

Salishan dialects are spoken in southern British Columbia. Some dialects are near extinction and include Okanagan, Comox, Lillooet and Squamish. There are 12 dialects in total.

Semi-Vowel

Neither a true vowel or consonant. It is a sound similar to that of a vowel, but is shorter in duration and articulated as one continuous, frictionless tone. It shares the same attributes as consonants.

Socialization

The process of training or educating someone to fit a particular social environment.

Status Indian

An Aboriginal person registered under the Indian Act. The Indian Act is a piece of federal legislation that determines who is Aboriginal.

Stereotype

A standardized image that is commonly held by members of a group, that represents an over-generalized, over simplified and often prejudiced attitude. Stereotypes tend to be negative in nature.

Symbolism

The artistic expression of revealing or suggesting ideas or thoughts.
