Métis

A distinct cultural group, who claim both Aboriginal and European ancestors. Métis is a French word meaning ‘mixed blood’.

Michif

The language spoken by Métis people, and is a mixture of Cree and French. As you move eastwards across Canada, Michif also included Ojibwa influences.

Mother Tongue

First native language, or a language from which another language originates. The first language that someone is taught to speak and is commonly spoken in the home
