Grade 4: Alberta: It's People in History

The following books have been selected to enhance the learning objectives set forth in the grade 4 lesson plans. The books contain stories that may be used in conjunction with the lessons or replace suggested stories within the lessons. These books should be available from the public library, university library, or by special order.


Steps in Time: Métis Dances—Video produced by the Gabriel Dumont Institute

The video highlights three traditional Métis dances. The steps are demonstrated clearly so students may follow along. This would be an excellent concluding exercise.


Apihtowkosan: The Story of Métis Nation in Western Canada—John and Betty Dorion (Northern Lights School Division #113)

A teachers guide that presents information on the cultural history and origin of the Métis. This book is an excellent source for those teachers who have little background knowledge of Métis culture.


Flags of the Métis—Calvin Racette

The history of Métis people is expressed through the history of their flags. The book is illustrated and describes various styles and symbols appearing on many Métis flags.


The Flower Beadwork People—Sherry Ferrell Racette

This book is a retelling of Métis history, cultural life, agricultural life, and origins with a special focus on Métis beadwork, music, and dance.


Métis Songs—Saskatchewan Music Educators Association

ISBN 0-920915-28-0

The book is a compilation of traditional and contemporary Métis songs that contains the words in both English, French, and Michif (traditional Métis language). This is an excellent resource to be used as an introductory activity.


The Gift of the Sacred Dog—Paul Goble

ISBN 0-02-043280

This book tells the story of a boys request to ease the suffering of his people by bringing horses to help them hunt the buffalo. The text reflects Sioux legend and Plains Aboriginal's culture.


Race with Buffalo—Richard Dockrey Young and Judy Dockrey Young

ISBN 0-87483-342-6

A collection of stories that describe events from earlier times such as legends involving tricksters and magical beasts. The stories focus on the importance of bravery and respect. A glossary of terms is included.


Alberta's Métis: People of the Western Prairie—June Schreiber et al.

Written in story format this book examines the major historical events and current issues surrounding Métis people.


Albertan's: Past, Present, Future—Kathryn G. Dueck and Kathryn E. Galvin

ISBN 0-9690637-7-6

This resource encompasses Alberta's first people, settlers, famous people as well as historic events such as the Depression, WWI and WWII.


Annette's People: The Métis—David C. Rempel and Laurence Anderson

Annette discovers that she is Métis and decides to research her people's history, heritage, and culture in Alberta.


Beavers, Beads, and Pemmican: Canada's Fur Traders—Katherine Farnham

Written in chronological order this book examines the fur trade across Canada. It contains maps, drawings, and historical photographs.


Settlement in the West—Rosemary Neering

ISBN 0-88902-178-3

This book follows the growth of pioneer communities in Western Canada from the time of early trading posts, the first Métis Settlements, and the early 20th century.
