Grade 3 Social Studies (Reflecting the World)
As students explore the web pages for Grade 3 Social Studies, they will have an opportunity to see how people from around the world came to Alberta and built buildings like those in their home countries. By doing this, students will appreciate the multicultural aspects of Alberta. Students will also have an opportunity to see the link between people of distant places and people in Alberta.
The students learn that Alberta has become the new home for people from around the world. People from a wide a range of places as India, Tunisia, and the Ukraine have made Alberta their home. When they arrived, they brought their traditions and religions and built buildings like those they knew in their homeland.
By looking at the different buildings in Alberta, we can see reflections of the world. Images of these building are provided here for you to see. Once you have seen some of the pictures, what other buildings in Alberta have you seen that remind you of other places in the world?
Hindu temples have been chosen as an example of architecture from India, mosques represent Tunisia, and Orthodox churches have been identified with Ukrainian culture in Alberta.
Students who can identify other structures from these countries can use them in completing the activities in this Edukit.
While surveying the resources in this Edukit, note the audio and video in the Multimedia section. There is an excellent video about Alberta Muslims and the mosques they have built.
Activity 1
Comparative Poster
After the students have had a chance to survey the content of this Edukit, they can combine the resources with other materials they have received in class. Students choose one country and make a comparative poster that includes images and explanations about that country and those people from that country who live in Alberta.
Posters should include:
- Two pictures from Alberta of the people from the country the students have chosen.
- A written explanation of what the two Alberta pictures are and how they represent the chosen country.
- Two pictures from the chosen country.
- Written explanations about the pictures from the chosen country.
Activity 2
Illustrated Pamphlet
The students will produce a pamphlet with images of buildings from the three identified cultural groups in Alberta that are presented in the Edukit. The students will draw and colour these pictures. The students will then write text to include in the pamphlet, which will explain what each building is and from what culture and country it has been derived.
Students are encouraged to bring information they have about any cultural group discussed in the Edukit as they produce their pamphlet. Students are encouraged to draw pictures of buildings from another source such as the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village as a part of the project. If a student’s family attends a mosque or Orthodox church, she or he may include this information into their project.
The student pamphlets should include information and images about India, Tunisia, and the Ukraine.
