During the Great Depression in the 1930s, there was very little construction because of the poor economic conditions. The buildings constructed at this time followed the styles of the modern movement. Buildings constructed during the modern movement were influenced by smooth and streamlined cars, ocean liners, and even aircraft. Such buildings had flat surfaces, rounded corners, and often had stucco white-washed surfaces.
An example of this kind of architecture was seen in the Edmonton Kresge’s store built in 1938. Another form of modernistic architecture was seen in Edmonton’s Varscona Theatre. The Varscona Theatre was designed by the Alberta architects Rule Wynn and Rule.
