The following books have been selected to enhance the learning objectives set forth in the grade 5 lesson plans. The books contain stories that may be used in conjunction with the lessons or replace suggested stories within the lessons. These books should be available from the public library, university library, or by special order.


Buffalo Woman—Paul Goble

A man and women are married and he learns her true form is as a buffalo. He is a hunter and learns to love her for her true form. The book emphasizes the relationship between Aboriginal culture and the buffalo.


Two Forms of Art—Sarain Stump

The book features the symbolism and meaning behind Aboriginal art. The book examines how feelings and ideas are expressed through reproducing nature in different artistic mediums.


Where Did You Get Your Moccasins?—Bernelda Wheeler

The process of making moccasins is told through a series of questions in story format.


Quillwork of the Plains—Julia Bebbington

ISBN 0-919224-29-6

This book provides the reader with an excellent history of quillwork across the plains. The book contains pictures of quillwork and discusses the tools, techniques, and styles of quillwork.


The Buffalo Hunt—Joanne Pelletier

This book describes the organization and execution of a buffalo hunt.


Spirit of the White Bison—Beatrice Culleton

The white bison represents the importance of bison to Aboriginal People and the events surrounding its disappearance from the Plains.


Six Season of the Woods Cree—Curriculum Resource Unit, Lac La Ronge Indian Band Education Branch

This is a wonderful chart that depicts the six seasons of the Woods Cree. This chart is an excellent sounding board for discussing cycles in nature and how Aboriginal People respect the natural world.


Indian Handcrafts—Keith C. Wilbur

This book highlights the techniques used to create and develop a number of different Aboriginal crafts from weapons, containers, toys, and clothing. The book also examines the era and people who were involved in making certain objects.
